"Plants vs. Zombies" is a tower defense game created and launched by PopCap Games for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X as well as by its parent company, Electronic Arts for Android. In these game, there are zombies that invade the house and players have to use crops to face them. The game was first launched on May 5, 2009. IOS version launched in February 2010. The Xbox Live Arcade version was released on September 8, 2010. There are also versions of Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, PS3 and Android. Windows and Mac versions have Game of the Year versions.
In "Plants vs. Zombies", players will select plants and mushrooms, and place them around the house which different areas of each level to face and defend the homeowners of the players from zombie attacks. Many plants can only attack in the line where it is, but there are some that can attack up to 3 rows at once as for example Threepeater. Zombies always enter the play area and walk in one of the lines, unless they bite the garlic they will move the line. In the game, there is a lawn mower and pool cleaner which at the backyard level at the left end of the yard that can destroy all the zombies in a row, but the tool cannot be reused until the next level. Most zombies will eat the crops they face, although there are also types of zombies that jump, destroy, and fly over crops.
Players start by selecting and planting pre-selected plants and see what zombies are available. New plants can be found at the end of the level. To plant crops, players must collect sun points that come from sunflowers or from the sky. Each plant is priced. Most plants can be easily eaten by zombies. Mushrooms need to be developed with coffee beans if used at daytime. Plants need to be planted on lotus flowers, except water plants if they want to be planted in water and need to be planted in flower pots to be planted on the roof. There are many types of plants with their own abilities, there are plants that can shoot their projectiles into zombies, produce the sun, or directly kill zombies by burning them, suppressing them, or eating them.
Zombies are also of various types, some are strong, fast walking, can instantly destroy crops, are able to fly with a balloon, some are even able to dance like Michael Jackson which replaced with disco zombies in the "Game of the Year" version that can emit another zombie from underground. There is a progress level at the bottom of the screen. Each big wave, many zombies appear simultaneously and when the final wave, there are zombies that appear from inside the pool, graveyard, or are placed by bungee zombies.
Main mode in "Plants vs. Zombies" is "Adventure Mode". After a few levels, "Mini-games" and "puzzle mode" can be played. "Survival Mode" opens after the game is over for the first time. There is also a Crazy Dave store where we buy change plants, water versions, or lawn mowers, increase the number of plants that can be selected, etc. There is also a "Zen Garden" where players collect plants and sell them, or make them happy. On iOS and Android, there is a "Quick Play" feature where players can play levels of adventure. On Xbox Live Arcade and Nintendo DS, there is a "Versus Mode" where players will beat each other. In Xbox Live Arcade there is also a "Co-op Mode" where two players will work together against zombies.
"Plants vs. Zombies" received positive acceptance from critics, gaining 88 as well 100 points from Metacritic and 89.5% from GameRankings. IGN editor Andy J Kolozsy commented that the game has more content than other games of the same genre, and also praises its addictive nature. However, the DS version was criticized for its low quality graphics and expensive point prices. GameSpot editor Chris Watters praised plant and zombie design, as well as its visuals and total value. However, he found fault in the arch. 1UP editor Alice Liang feels the style of play can be enjoyed, as well as commenting on the lawn mower that protects the left side of the screen provides a balance between ease of use and deep play style. Edge reviews praise PopCap Games for adding an imaginative touch to every little detail of the game. He also praised them for taking the tower defense genre and making their own.
In May 2013, the latest version of Facebook was released by developer PopCap Games and the release of Electronic Arts. The style of play is tower defense, players no longer have to protect a house from zombie attacks, they will travel to a new location. The game has been available to all users since May 20, 2013.
In late 2012, PopCap announced that they were working on "Plants vs. Zombies", but its status was questioned after the announcement when the company passed its dismissal period. "Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time" was released on August 15, 2013, and was only available on the iOS system for some time before being released on other systems. PopCap and its owner, Electronic Arts, also announced "Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare", a cooperative third-person shooting game based on "Plants vs. Zombies", for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows, is also a sequel.
